EMANCIPATION IN EXILE – SURREALIST WOMEN ARTISTS AND WRITERS IN MEXICO: LEONORA CARRINGTON & REMEDIOS VARO

Affiliated to the surrealist movement through their respective love affairs with Max Ernst and Benjamin Péret, Leonora Carrington and Remedios Varo fled from World War II France to the Americas. Both finally settled in Mexico City where they became close friends and eventually emancipated from the dictates of Surrealist aesthetics, developing their own artistic expression in painting and writing. The lecture will focus on the question in what ways their exile situation influenced their artistic development and whether, and if so, how they expressed their “Mexican experience”.
Doris Eibl is a Visiting Professor from the University of Innsbruck in UNO’s Department of English and Foreign Languages in the spring semester 2017; she serves as part of the faculty exchange between UNO and the University of Innsbruck. She is a Senior Scientist with the Department of Romance Languages and Literatures at the University of Innsbruck. Since 2011, she has been co-editor-in-chief of the Zeitschrift für Kanada-Studien. She is member of the interdisciplinary research groups “Gender Studies: Identities – Discourses – Transformations” and “Cultural Encounters – Cultural Conflicts” at the University of Innsbruck. Her research interests include Surrealism, the French novel of the “extrême contemporain”, the dynamics between historiography and fictional writing in the French novel of the extreme contemporain and French-Canadian Literature of the 20th and 21st century.
