Center Austria and the Department of Anthropology (professor of archeology Rya Gray) at the University of New Orleans (UNO) are involved in a joint project with the Department of Archeology of the partner university in Innsbruck under the leadership of Professor Harald Stadler, who served as a guest professor at UNO in the fall of 2019.
University of Innsbruck archeology students have begun to dig on the grounds of Castle Trautson, above the town of Matrei on the Brenner route. This medieval castle was destroyed in the final month of World War II by American planes bombing the railroad line across the Brenner Pass to cut off supplies from reaching the German war front in Norther Italy.
During these bombings a number of people from the town of Matrei were killed. These events have left a deep memory among the local population. The archeological dig and the historical research that comes with it will try to explain these events more clearly.
