The largest battle in U.S. military history is not the 1944-45 Battle of the Bulge, but the Meuse-Argonne. Lasting from September 26 to November 11, 1918, it sucked in over one million American personnel. U.S. combat losses were about 26,000 killed and 100,000 other casualties overall, most of them during the battle’s first three weeks.

This titanic battle and those which preceded it, including Belleau Wood, Soissons and Chateau Thierry, left an indelible impression not just on the military, but on American culture.

In this talk, historian and author Edward G. Lengel traces the outlines of American military participation in World War I, and explains why these battles remain compellingly relevant today
