Explaining the insurgent candidacies of Senator Bernie Sanders and businessman Donald J. Trump for the respective Democratic and Republican Party presidential nominations. The explanation is in the context of the government and party rules that govern the selection process and the importance of voter turnout. It then examines the subsequent unfolding of the 2016 presidential election contest between Democrat Hillary Rodham Clinton and Republican Trump from their national conventions, presidential debates, and general election campaigns.
